All Aboard The Arc!

The Arc in Massachusetts has kicked off its annual All Aboard The Arc! Awareness Campaign. The campaign culminates in a ride-a-thon and rally on Saturday, May 18, 2013. All Aboard The Arc! is a statewide celebration event for individuals, families and the greater community to show support and solidarity to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The ride-a-thon is a rally and fundraising event where individuals and teams can pledge to raise money for chapters of The Arc in Massachusetts. The Arc is the leading advocacy organization for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Individuals who raise over $300 earn seats on luxury motor coaches that will depart from several send-off locations across the state.

At 1 P.M. on Saturday, all riders and supporters will unite in Boston at the Hynes Convention Center for a celebratory concert and rally featuring performances by teen pop star and anti-bullying advocate Gabbie Rae and the band Flame, made up of musicians with disabilities, which was recently featured in People Magazine.

Changing with the times

In alignment with The Arc of United States, we, as an organization have been sensitive to the impact of terminology on our constituency and have adapted accordingly.  As the words 'retardation' and 'retarded' became pejorative, derogatory and demeaning in usage, the organization changed its name to 'The Arc'.

Today, the term 'mental retardation' remains the terminology used in the medical field and referenced in many state and federal laws.  However, 'intellectual disability' and 'developmental disability' are making their presence known, and we are doing everything in our power to make sure they're adopted more broadly.

We strongly believe the only 'r-word' that should be used when referring to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is "Respect."

All across the United States, Arc's are aligning their names, logos and colors so we are a unified force in creating awareness for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Please join us in spreading the word about our movement and the great work done by The Arc of US and here at your local chapter, The Arc of South Norfolk.
